A total number of 2989 Coronavirus tests have been carried out in Northern Ireland, it was announced last night.
And of those tests, a total number of 172 returned positive for Covid-19, the Department of Health has said.
24 new positive cases of Covid-19 in Northern Ireland were confirmed on Tuesday evening.
In a statement the Department said: “As of 6pm on Tuesday 24 March, testing has resulted in 24 new positive cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Northern Ireland to 172.
“To date, five people who tested positive have sadly died.
“A patient who was in their eighties and had underlying health conditions has sadly died at Antrim Hospital.
“In addition, an earlier death has also been confirmed as Covid-19 related.”
Stormont’s health minister has said that Coronavirus testing will be expanded to 1,100 per day.
More than 600 tests are being carried out daily in the regional virus laboratory in Belfast and by early next week that number will increase to 900 tests.
Two other testing centres will later begin operating, bringing the total to more than 1,100, Robin Swann said.
